If we think of the fruits grown in Sicily, we do not immediately think of tropical fruit, but of citrus fruits!
Oranges, lemons, grapefruits and mandarins steal the scene from Sicilian mangoes, papayas, avocados and bananas.
In reality, the cultivation of tropical fruit in Sicily is not a tradition, but a trend born of the favorable climate and market demands.
Sicily, in fact, offers a climate very similar to those areas of Asia and Latin America where there are tropical fruit plantations.
A request that comes from consumers
According to a survey by Coldiretti, 6 out of 10 Italians (61%) would buy Italian tropical fruit if it were available in the markets, to the detriment of the foreign counterpart.
Another very interesting fact came out of the same survey: 71% of Italians would be willing to pay more (compared to products imported from Asia and Latin America) for the purchase of tropical fruit made in Italy.
The choice is due to a greater freshness of the fruits that take less time to pass from harvest to the consumer’s table and to greater safety on the cultivation processes. According to Coldiretti, that of tropical fruit made in Italy is a phenomenon destined to change consumption choices in the coming years.
